1. Introduction
Steam Pad is a robust tool designed to calculate the thermodynamic and transport properties of water and steam, utilizing the most recent releases from the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS). It offers distinctive features suitable for various industrial, engineering, and educational applications:
- Calculates additional properties based on any two selected basic parameters.
- Generates T-S, H-S, P-H, and T-H charts, accurately locating results within these visual representations.
- Computes supplementary thermodynamic and transport parameters efficiently.
- Facilitates the saving and restoring of results for user convenience.
2. Calculator
2.1 Inputs and Outputs
The application enables users to input any two parameters from the foundational set (Pressure, Temperature, Enthalpy, Entropy, Specific Volume, Vapour Fraction) to derive four additional parameters along with other relevant thermodynamic and transport properties. The flexibility in input and output options ensures adaptability to diverse computational requirements.
2.2 Range of Validity
The specified range of validity for general properties aligns with the criteria established in the IAPWS IF97 release concerning pressure and temperature.
2.3 Single-Phase and Two-Phase Regions
The application effectively manages calculations for both Single-Phase and Two-Phase regions. It automatically distinguishes calculated properties based on input conditions, displaying the results accordingly. For instance, saturation properties can be determined from inputs such as P (below 22.06395 MPa) and X (ranging from 0.0 to 1.0).
2.4 Other Properties
Additional optional parameters are computed using IAPWS releases or based on physical models, which include:
- Specific Internal Energy (u)
- Specific Isobaric Heat Capacity
- Specific Isochoric Heat Capacity
- Speed of Sound
- Dynamic Viscosity

2.5 Units
The application displays parameters either in SI (metric) or I-P (English) units, with options for resetting through the Outputs Setting function.
3. Charts
3.1 Chart Types
This application includes typical thermodynamic charts presented as vector graphics. For clarity and application focus, only regions 1 to 4 are represented in the charts while region 5 is excluded. The gradual changes among the selected parameters are illustrated along with their respective axes.

3.2 Charts Display
- The lines representing other parameters are color-coded for differentiation.
- Labeled checkboxes allow for visibility control over chart lines.
- Charts can be manipulated through dragging or pinching gestures for size adjustments.
- Corresponding values are marked along the lines at designated intervals.
- Saturation region boundaries and the critical point are highlighted distinctly.
3.3 Calculated Results
The calculated results are pinpointed within the charts as identifiable markers that correspond with their respective coordinates.
4. Results
The application allows users to save calculated records containing six foundational parameters in a list format within the Results panel by engaging the Save button on the Calculator panel:
- The two input parameters of each record are visually distinguished by color.
- The region classification of each result along with potential arrangement numbers for multiple outputs is displayed prominently at the top of each row.
- The records are fully rearrangeable and deletable as needed.
- A selected record can be restored on both the Calculator and Charts panels via the Restore button.
